Squid MotherPosted at 11:00 PM on Feb. 8, 2006
The study of intelligence in nature has just exploded and is the hottest trend in biology. I hardly get a Science News that does not have at least one new research study on animal intelligence. This is a clear paradigm shift. Up until just a very few years ago most biologists scoffed at the idea that there was any intelligence in simple life and anything that did not have a big brain like humans was just a simple computer reacting to the environment. One of these “dumb” creatures is a small squid. Studies in labs said that they just lay their eggs and then let the babies fend for themselves, but a deep water camera in Monterey Canyon off California’s coast happened upon a squid mom who picked up her eggs and moved them apparently to a safer place. As she carried the membrane, which was bigger the she was and had 2000 to 3000 eggs, she would flare her arms once or twice a minute. This was most likely to flush water over them to provide oxygen for them.
